Do we make war more inhumane by trying to make it humane

Post by markharr »

Smart bomb's, drones, smart bullets, all attempts at making war humane by minimizing the loss of life, but do they actually prolong war and suffering. Just a hypothetical scenario.

I don't think we should have gone into Iraq at all but since we did.

what if when we invaded Iraq we would have done just like we did with Japan in WWII (minus the nuke)? Carpet and firebombed cities until they surrendered. Yes, there would have been a lot of loss of life in a short period, but it would have ended within a few days. Instead, we tried to fight this humane war and as a result, the war has been prolonged for over a decade and instead of losing 10,000 people in one day like they would have done with the carpet bombing you lose hundreds of thousands over a decade. In addition to that, we have prolonged suffering and starvation for over a decade by keeping the region in a constant state of war.

It isn't possible to fight a humane war. The whole point of war is to make it so bad for the other side that they stop doing whatever it was they did to start the war and never even consider doing it again. In other words, we shouldn't go to war unless whatever the other country did was so egregious that it warrants carpet bombing cities including innocent civilians.

Japan is a perfect example. They were very aggressive before WWII and became a very peaceful society after they were humbled in WWII.

The united States should be the gentle giant in our foreign policy. We all know the person who is big and strong in stature but kind patient, longsuffering, and caring in personality. you know that it takes a lot to make that person mad, and if you do cross that line. If you do do something to them that is so egregious that it causes them to lose their temper you are in big trouble. So you don't do anything to cause them to lose their temper. Joseph Smith was the perfect example of this. That is how the united states used to be before WWII. Since then we are like the little arrogant man with the short temper. We all know that person as well. Always overcompensating engaging in aggressive, antisocial behavior and starting fights.
