Your thoughts on High Heels

Post by red6 »

This one is more or less for everyone but Sisters do you realize the effect of High Heels (Like 5 inch +) have on at least some men? Maybe I am just a carnal guy but I have noticed a trend of them at church more and more it’s almost an appropriate Lingerie in my mind or is it just me?

Wasn't aware that high heels are carnal.

I'm more impressed with comfortable shoes...

There are many clothing and social behaviors that are of the celestial order. Making your legs look longer with taller heals will turn more heads, and women (most) like the extra subtile attention. After a while, some women out grow this need as they grow spiritually. Its not a function of "doing something bad", Id say its more like caring what other people thing of you, where you start to care about other people. Just a different way of thinking.

I'm with rewcox. All I think of is "How can they walk in those?'" and "Boy, those must be uncomfortable!". :)

I think they are inappropriate in church also, for the same reasons you said, and I am a woman who once wore them. I first remember wearing platform shoes to work in 1972, but they had a big thick heel, not like the thin heels women are wearing today. Thankfully, the style was short-lived back then. I wore the regular 3 inch high heels to work when I worked for 1 year at an Insurance Company in San Francisco in the 1980's. I used to walk up and down the street in the financial district during our 1 hour lunch break with those shoes on. I was too proud to change into sneakers because I didn't want to destroy the look of my ensemble. I nearly destroyed my feet and my lower back.

Not only do they ultimately destroy the pad of a woman's foot and lead to bone spurs, broken bones the size of tiny chicken bones in her feet which are almost impossible to fix, when she is in her 50's or 60's , she's probably going to go the podiatrist to try to repair torn ligaments in her feet because she can't walk without a limp.

When I lived in Las Vegas twenty years ago, I noticed the trend for the platform foot and the 5 inch heels was coming back. I even owned a pair or two because they made me look thinner. What a stupid reason to torture myself! I'd go out dancing in them, my feet would cramp up and swell from the damage, and then I couldn't walk without pain for the next few days. Now I wear comfortable sneakers almost everywhere.

High heels make a woman's butt stick out more, and when a woman walks in high heels, her hips sway (more than if she was wearing flats, sneakers, etc). These are the undeniable mechanics of females wearing high heels. Some men apparently like this effect. Some women apparently like that they have this effect on men (all but one of whom is not their husband, of course). Fully 90% of the women in our ward wear either high heels (3" or taller) or flip-flops to church on any given Sunday. Most of the women who wear the highest heels also wear well-above-the-knee dresses/skirts, which are usually skin-tight, as well. As they give lessons/talks on chastity, morality, etc.

Here's an interesting article - http://www.randomhistory.com/1-50/036heels.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"No other shoe, however, has gestured toward leisure, sexuality, and sophistication as much as the high-heeled shoe. Fraught with contradiction, heels paradoxically inhibit movement in order to increase it, at least in appearance. Standing in heels, a woman presents herself already half-walking while at the same time reducing the length of her step, fostering the illusion of speed while suggesting the promise of an imminent fall. The higher and more unstable the heel, the more clearly these contradictions are expressed (Kunzle 2004). Doctors and scholars alike have argued about the physical and cultural effect, both positive and negative, that heels have had not only on women, but on society as a whole."

"In ancient Rome, sex trade was not illegal and female prostitutes were readily identified by their high heels (Wilson 2005)."

"One visitor noted that they were “invented by husbands who hoped the cumbersome movement [that] entailed would make illicit liaisons difficult” (McDowell 1989). Already we can see issues of domination and submission being associated with shoes much like the lotus shoes of China. Indeed, Chinese concubines and Turkish odalisques wore high shoes, prompting scholars to speculate if heels were used not only for aesthetic reasons but also to prevent women from escaping the harem (Kunzle 2004)."

"novelist Restif de Bretonne threw erotic emphasis on the finely arched foot and the delicately curved high heel (Kunzle 2004). Consequently, many women taped their feet to reduce their apparent size. Like the corset, high heels sculpted the body to make it appear more aristocratic, pure, refined, and desirable. The desirable and sexual nature of the high heel was also noted by the Puritans in the New World. The Massachusetts Colony even passed a law banning women from wearing high heels to ensnare a man or they would be tried as a witch (Murstein 1974)."

"But critics cited that high heels created a more sexually aggressive gait and compared the high heel to a “poisoned hook” to catch an unwary male."

"First mentioned in London’s Daily Telegram on September 10, 1953, the exaggeratedly slender heel and narrowing of the toe equated sheer height with chic and strongly suggested phallic-erectile symbolism and sexual maturation."

"For many feminists, high heels indicated subservience and sexual stereotyping by men. High heels were titillating “man-made” objects, literally involved in crippling women, or at least slowing them down when the need to run away from male violence and oppressors arose. Heels were seen as a comparable successor to foot binding and the tight-laced corset as perverse regulatory objects for molding the feminine."

"This change of heart about high heels perhaps was provoked by counter-cultural street fashion of the early 1980s as well as by feminist debates about pleasure and female desire, which indirectly changed the way fashion was understood. Western women now claimed they were wearing high heels for themselves and that heels gave them not only height but also power and authority."

"Perhaps influenced in part by successful TV and film hits as Sex in the City and The Devil Wears Prada, some women are even going under the knife to shorten their toes or inject padding into the balls of their feet to allow their feet to fit more comfortably into a pair of stilettos (Sherr)."

I challenge your claim on highlighted above. Even though I don’t know your ward. In my predominantly young family ward lots wear heels but I very rarely see a skirt that would not cover garments (top of the knee and up), tight yes but still covers everything, so the blanket statement that most heel wearers wear short skirts too, I disagree with but maybe in your demographic they do. I see plenty of modesty

I tried a pair of heels ONCE and I felt so dumb wearing them. Maybe I felt dumb because I couldnt really walk in them without wobbling. They felt dangerous! It must take some good practice to be able to function in them.

I persoanlly dont care if women wear heals if it makes them feel more powerful or taller or whatever. Isint that why women wear them in the business world? So they can feel like they can be on the same "height" level as men?

Okay, so I really just dont get the heels thing but it sure seems (at least when I was a young woman/young adult) that your not quite measuring up to something if you dont doll yourself up with high heels and tight figure reavealing dresses and other clothes, fancy up your hair and put gobs of various makeups on.

I sure am thankful that I never needed to do all those things to look good -

I personally thinks squats do more for a ladies behind, but why all the focus anyways. Don't blame what others wear for your thoughts. They are your thoughts.

High heels are not quite as stupid as plastic surgery. Read: high heels are very dumb.

They are uncomfortable, physically damaging, and are one more pointless thing for women to worry about. That's what I'll be telling my daughter if I ever have one. But that if she does choose to wear them, well, I've done stupid things in my life too.

I wonder if Adam enjoyed Eve in her high heels? Better yet, what color heels does heavenly Mother wear?

Point is......sexuality is very much a social construct...anything aside from boy meets girl, girl meets boy is going to fade. If loafers were used in sexy commercial then every woman (whos vain) will be getting the latest pair to hopefully one up the next lady in her superior desirability. ..or to get strange mens attention.

Remeber ladies, you will have to answer for your immodest influence in this world on those of the (same) opposite gender. With all the porn problems in the world.....BE DIFFERENT

There will be a day where a modest woman will be so hard to find she will shine as a ruby and all will desire a woman like that. Just like tattoos. Its soooo refreshing to see a person who hasnt bought into displaying tattoos.

16 ¶Moreover the Lord saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:

17 Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the Lord will discover their secret parts.

18 In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon,

Was it just me?
