Put Your Shoulder to the Wheel

Post by cyclOps »

"The Church has need of helping hands, and hearts that know and feel. The work to do is here for you; put your shoulder to the wheel.

Then don't stand idly looking on; the fight with sin is real. It will be long but must go on; put your shoulder to the wheel."

This was never one of my favorite songs, but its words are true and these two middle verses stood out to me today.

The chorus I used to sing went:

"Break your shoulder on the wheel bite your tongue, twist ankle wrist and elbow wrench your arm, we all have worms let no one squirm, break your shoulder on the wheel".

Sometimes I get the hymn book out and read the inspiring words. My favorite is;

" There is a green hill far away, without a city wall, where the dear Lord was crucified, He died to save us all."

I have always loved the song Put Your Shoulder to the Wheel. The fight with sin is very real.

Yea, I think that the poetry in many of our hymns vividly displays truths that endless rhetoric could not.

I happen to like

Why should we mourn or think our lot is hard? tis not so all is right
Why should we think to earn a great reward if we now shun the fight
Gird up your loins fresh courage take Our God will never us forsake...

and also

And should we die before our journeys through, Happy day all is well
We then are free from toil and sorrow too. With the just we shall dwell

Actually my favorite hymn that brings a lump to my throat is not even an LDS hymn..

Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me...

I always wondered why we don't include that one in our hymn books... maybe we would use up too many tissues.

Regards,

George Clay

I spoke today in sacrament and these verses sum up my talk perfectly.

I would have sang it on the Trek if I'd known it. :)

I really like Amazing Grace, too. I was told it's no longer in our hymn book because of something about the doctrine of grace not being accurately portrayed in the song. I can't find anything about it that is incorrect, though.
Anyone know what is doctrinally wrong with Amazing Grace?

Lyrics
Amazing grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now I'm found.
Was blind but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.
When we've been there ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Then when we first begun.
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now I'm found.
Was blind, but now I see

There are lots of gems in the hymn book. The song of the righteous really is a prayer unto God.

I do love "Come come he saints". I have been trying to get better at playing it on the harmonica but I am a self taught novice on the harmonica, so it's a work in progress.

Joel H Johnson of "High on a Mountain Top" is my direct ancestor. So is William Fowler of "We Thank Thee O God For a Prophet"

My daughters get the words to " I love to see the Temple," wrong.

They change the words, "This is my sacred duty," to
" This is my secret beauty." :)

What a great thread! :)

I find myself humming and singing hymns throughout the day (and night)...lately it's been "Rock of Ages", especially the 2nd verse:

Not the labors of my hands
Can fill all thy law's demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and thou alone.

"Consider the Lilies of the Field" is very tender and makes me teary eyed. "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" and "Lord, I Would Follow Thee" are also favorites, but there are so many incredible hymns that it makes it hard to choose.

Ever since seeing The Other Side of Heaven I have really liked "Abide With Me Tis Even Tide". I don't remember if I knew it much before then or not.

I don't like the battle hymn of the republic.

A few things in the song I don't agree with at all.

Like

3. In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea,

Umm wrong.

He was born in a filthy manger with a bunch of animals. A truly humble birth. And a important teaching.

My favorite hymns are How Great Thou Art and Be Still My Soul - they've both gotten me through a lot in life. Also, Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, with this verse holding special meaning lately -

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
Let that grace now, like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to Thee
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart, O take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above

It's not a hymn, but I love the poetry and description of sin, repentance, atonement, and forgiveness in the latter part of "Deathbed" from Relient K:

"I was so scared of Jesus but he sought me out
Like the cancer in my lungs, it's killing me now
And I've given up hope on the days I have left
But I cling to the hope of my life in the next
Well, then Jesus showed up, said, "Before we go up
I thought that we might reminisce
See one night in your life, when you've turned out the lights
You asked for and prayed for my forgiveness"
You cried, wolf, the tears, they soaked your fur
The blood dripped from your fangs, you said, "What have I done?"
You loved that lamb with every sinful bone
And there you wept alone, your heart was so contrite
You said, "Jesus, please forgive me of my crimes
Sanctify this withered heart of mine
Stay with me until my life is through
And on that day, please take me home with you"

" A Mighty Fortress Is Our God "

I love playing this on the piano, powerful!

He overcometh all
He saveth from the fall
His might and power are great
He all things did create
And He shall reign for evermore.
