Will There Be A Call Out?

Post by LdsMarco »

We are blessed to be led by a modern-day prophet and other inspired leaders. We need to follow them. They have not mentioned tent cities, but they have counseled us to prepare for adversity by having a supply of food and water, and money in savings. We have been counseled:

“We encourage members worldwide to prepare for adversity in life by having a basic supply of food and water and some money in savings. We ask that you be wise, and do not go to extremes. With careful planning, you can, over time, establish a home storage supply and a financial reserve.”

Notice we have been told to prepare, but also counseled “do not go to extremes”. We should prepare for the future by following both parts of this counsel.

No call out!
ELder Holland has been saying this for a few years...
"One of the many unique characteristics of our dispensation, this the dispensation of the fulness of times—the last and greatest of all dispensations—is the changing nature of how we establish the kingdom of God on earth. You see, one of the truly exciting things about this dispensation is that it is a time of mighty, accelerated change. And one thing that has changed is that the Church of God will never again flee. It will never again leave Ur in order to leave Haran, in order to leave Canaan, in order to leave Jerusalem, in order to leave England, in order to leave Kirtland, in order to leave Nauvoo, in order to go who knows where. No, as Brigham Young said for us all, “We have been kicked out of the frying-pan into the fire, out of the fire into the middle of the floor, and here we are and here we will stay.”

Thank you Marco for sharing. If Elder Holland said it, it's good enough for me! I was one that didn't believe but wasn't sure...kind of better be safe than sorry thing. I've got to show my brother this video who is also on the fence.

I'm always intrigued by the counsel to not go to extremes. A year before the Flood, getting on the ark might have seemed extreme. The day the rain started it was the most prudent thing to do.

Buying $25 worth of food storage every month, while still eating out and going to the movies and booking vacations and buying a great big ol' flat screen TEEVEE, might seems like a good plan as long as one has full employment. However, if injuries or financial crisis or war occurred suddenly, that plan would immediately be seen as faulty.

You make some good points here too. Moving to the Rocky Mountains now for safety might seem extreme to some, but the first time there is an attack of war on a big city on the East Coast, some people may change their tune about wanting to stay there, and then it may seem more prudent to get out of the big cities.

My thought exactly. He doesn't even specify exactly when and where the meeting took place. He chose to not use a smart phone or tape recorder to record the claimed question and answer. And the way he tried expressing himself was so slow and long winded that I decided I had better things to do.

explained concerning the coming of the Son of Man; also that it is a false idea that the Saints will escape all the judgments, whilst the wicked suffer; for all flesh is subject to suffer, and ‘the righteous shall hardly escape’ [see D&C 63:34]; still many of the Saints will escape, for the just shall live by faith [see Habakkuk 2:4]; yet many of the righteous shall fall a prey to disease, to pestilence, etc., by reason of the weakness of the flesh, and yet be saved in the Kingdom of God. So that it is an unhallowed principle to say that such and such have transgressed because they have been preyed upon by disease or death, for all flesh is subject to death; and the Savior has said, ‘Judge not, lest ye be judged.’ [See Matthew 7:1.]”12

Wrong. When I find some anonymous or unverifiable statement that supports my beliefs I usually either don't pass it along or point out the dubious nature. When I come across a video, even if that video is quoting general authorities or scripture, if it is one of those things where somebody holds one page at a time or where three seconds worth of reading is put on the screen for 30 seconds, I lose interest and find something else to occupy my time. I am aware of confirmation bias and I tend to overreact by holding confirming data to a higher standard of validation.

If this really happened I would have wanted to ask Elder Holland a follow-up question. "Sir, in 1883, then Elder Woodruff prophesied of New York being destroyed by an earthquake, Boston being swept into the sea, and Albany being burned. If there is to be no form of gathering, what of Saints in those cities and other cities that will be destroyed? Since the Los Angeles area is a hotbed of pornography and other forms of wickedness, should we just plan to die when the prophesied destructions come?"

No that is where you use your own brains and say enough is enough, I'm getting my family out of this wicked place and moving elsewhere.

Even if the Church doesn't issue a mass-exodus decree to everyone in the event of a calamity, I'm believing that an individual's common sense (and inspiration from the Holy Spirit) will prevail in certain circumstances. If the damn breaks up yonder, one might want to head for high ground. We shouldn't need to be commanded in all things.

If the Chinese and Russians invade and according to these ridiculously silly non-prophecies the US gov't will have no response whatsoever, where will you go??? You think you can hide from them in Heber? Let me get this straight. The Chi / Rus have the capability to completely overwhelm the combined US forces but son't have the ability tot find refugees hiding in the woods 30 miles from a population center? Really?

If one doesn't have resources to resist an attacking force, I think the natural inclination is to flee. It doesn't always work, but sometimes it can buy you time. Often the military is more interested in capturing resources and strategic targets than they are in chasing after a bunch of rag-tag people who are fleeing the area ahead of their arrival.

By fleeing from Moscow in wagons and on foot, taking their food and supplies with them, and leaving a barren city behind them, the Russians were effective in bringing about the death of 400,000 of Napoleon's French soldiers who had invaded Russia and expected to conquer the Muscovites but faced a frozen Russian winter without enough food for all their troops instead. Sometimes fleeing trouble, rather than staying and fighting, can be the smartest move of all.

Here's the problem: I have two real friends in Utah, neither of whom would let me move in with them (one is a single female, the other is away from home and his wife four to five days per week). I have no family in Utah or elsewhere in the region, and I have no other friends in the region. Right now I don't even have enough money to spend a week in a cheap hotel. So if things do go really bad, where do I go?

I am not alone in this. I know a great many people in the church who don't have close friends or family in areas that we can anticipate will be relatively safe, who therefore would not have any place to go if things get bad where they live. If there were just a hundred or so people in this situation, I'm sure it could be handled without a lot of difficulty. But when there are tens of thousands of people who would need to go someplace relatively safe, without direction from church leadership a lot of us have problems finding someplace to go.

Elder Holland's response might be along the lines of how Jesus sometimes responded to questions - the truth, but not the whole truth. Even if Elder Holland knew the future, do you think he would have given a straight answer? How reckless would that be?

33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.

34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:

35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:

36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

While the Church is not going to "flee into the wilderness," or in other words, pick up all it's members and possessions and relocate to a different part of the planet, who can say that direction or warnings from the prophet will not ever come? He didn't say that. Was the example of the prophet warning the people of Haun's mill an example of the Church "fleeing into the wilderness?" Was Brigham Young's direction for many members to pick up and relocate to certain parts of the country a type of "fleeing into the wilderness." As Joseph said, beware of putting up stakes when it comes to defining what God will or will not do?

Revelation
4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

Isaiah
20 ¶Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.

21 For, behold, the Lord cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

But you give credibility to a person who says she had an NDE by talking to some dude named John. And you listen to her interviews with her blubbering and crying and rambling on and on. Whatever.

I'm just pointing it out.

Your question also doesn't make sense to me. There is a difference between a mass church-wide call out and specific areas facing disasters. I don't think anybody is arguing against specific areas. What I got out of the answer from Elder Holland is that this would not occur on a church-wide level.

That is not what the Julie Rowe and other Prophets of Doom are saying.

That's funny... I read two of Rowe's three books, listened to several radio interviews, listened to her in person, and never once do I recall any reference to every church member worldwide being told to gather. I only recall a nationwide gathering being described.

Since you seem to know Rowe's words so much better than me, please point out where she describes poor church members in locations where they have to save up for years to be able to attend the temple being expected to hop a flight to Salt Lake on a moment's notice.
