Game of Thrones

Post by HoldingFast »

So anyone watch it? I view it as sword and sorcery porn so I don't watch it. But I just learned that a bishopric member (and former temple worker) stopped watching it a few years back, not due to the nudity, violence, inappropriateness, etc, but because of the intrigue and how the author keeps killing off main characters. And his daughters are on FB unhappy about how this last season ended, meaning they have watched all of it and he seems to be supportive of them watching it. I had quite a bit of respect for him but less so now.

So what are your thoughts on these types of shows and those who watch them?

Not my style... And while I do enjoy nudity, Game of Thrones never appealed to me.
Heavy Metal is my go to sword and sorcery porn... Or some animes.
Some of them however literally are porn. I don't feel any guilt over porn, really because I am single.

Life's hard enough without worrying about the sins of others.

On the other hand, maybe good couples watching?

Haven't seen it, but it basically sounds like the Book of Ether with all the spiritual stuff edited out.

Reading through the parental guide on IMDB was enough to convince me it isn't worth my time. The parental guide makes it very clear the show is both flagrantly pornographic and graphically violent.

Well put; I hadn't quite thought of it like that.

As for myself, I have never seen it. I am nearing the end of a deliberate process of personal re-sensitisation. Some years ago I would watch anything short of x-rated. I enjoyed the action (violence) movies a lot. Then I had a change of heart and decided that I really didn't need this stuff in my mind anymore. I decided to reverse the process of desensitisation that had been going on in my mind. It really has been worth it. I can hear the promptings of the Spirit a little bit more easily now.

It has been difficult to do this. Movies and shows on TV are a social experience and often I would be faced with the dilemma of having family and friends wanting to share movies with me and watch them with me. Still, as a father I have tried to lead from the front, and I would politely excuse myself from the movie. Everyone is now aware of my personal standards and respect them to a great degree BECAUSE I have never sought to impose them on others. My family has gradually tended to follow my lead and that is the best way to lead.

As a mature aged university student of history and sociology I am well aware of the role of violence, propaganda, power and porn in Satan's plan for world domination. I don't need to see it glorified in my living room.

Definitely recommend the books. Waay better than the shows. They have completely given up following the books at this point. Also, nice BB reference Lemuel.
