There are two phases to having one's Calling and Election Made Sure as evidenced / witnessed in the Life of the Savior. The first phase is having the "more sure word of prophecy" in the form of receiving the "promise" which essentially consists of hearing your name and receiving a promise of eternal life - knowing of your approval in the sight of God by prophecy / revelation. (It is important to recognize that prophecy is a "subset" of revelation as it pertains to the "future.") This event occurred in the Life of the Savior in the following event:BruceRGilbert wrote:"in his own time, in his own way, and according to his own will." How many trust God to allow Him to make the determination as to the time, the way, and will in which He will reveal Himself?Doctrine and Covenants 88:
68 Therefore, sanctify yourselves that your minds become single to God, and the days will come that you shall see him; for he will unveil his face unto you, and it shall be in his own time, and in his own way, and according to his own will.
Many have been deceived by false spirits going forth unto the world and many have w itnessed things that are not of God . . . because they sought for "signs" and manifestations. Many have been turned over to their own lusts.
Note: It was after this time that the Savior was tried and tempted in the wilderness by Satan prior to beginning His ministry - which should illustrate a pattern that has been given. The "more sure word of prophecy" is NOT an indication that you have arrived as many have presumed and it is dangerous to believe so.Matthew 3:
13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
The Second Phase to having one's Calling and Election Made Sure, again witnessed in the Life of the Savior, is in the actual fulfillment of the promise and the reception of the "fulness of the Priestnood" with the conveyance of the associated keys and power; thereof. This event occurred in the Life of the Savior in the following event:
I believe that it was at this event that Peter, James and John received their "Promise;" however, they did not receive the fulness. They witnessed the Savior receive it. After this event, they received - according to the account - the power to bind on earth and in heaven, as evidenced by the following reference:Matthew 17:
1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,
2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.
3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and *Elias (Elijah) talking with him.
4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
As can be observed, there are very strong parallels which occurred in the life of the Prophet Joseph Smith. He, also, received a fulness as evidenced by the visitation in the Kirkland Temple.Matthew 18:
18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
