Principles Of The Gospel

Post by lundbaek »

In the book “Principles of the Gospel”, copyright 1982 by the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, one finds 2 sections or chapters that reinforce my assertion that the Constitution of the United States is a gospel principle.

THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES
pp 145-147

"In a revelation given on December 16, 1833, to the Prophet Joseph Smith the Lord said, “It is not right that any man should be in bondage to another. And for this purpose have I established the Constitution of this land, by the hands of wise men whom I raised up unto this very purpose, and redeemed the land by the shedding of blood.” (D&C 101:79-80)"

"During a period when the Saints were being denied the protection of the Constitution, Joseph Smith wrote: “The Constitution of the United States is a glorious standard; it is founded in the wisdom of God. It is a heavenly banner; it is to all those who are privileged with the sweets of liberty, like the cooling shades and refreshing waters of a great rock in a thirsty and weary land. It is like a great tree under whose branches men from every clime can be shielded from the burning rays of the sun...."

“We say...that the Constitution of the United States is true...(Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pp 147-148)

"In the Book of Mormon the word of the Lord came to the ancient prophet Jacob as follows: “This land [the American continent] shall be a land of liberty unto the Gentiles, and there shall be no kings upon the land...And I will fortify this land agaisnt all other nations.” (( Nephi 10:11-12)"

"The brother of Jared had also received a promise from the Lord concerning this land, “that who so should posess this land of promise, from that time henceforth, should serve him, the true and only God, or they should be swept off when the fulness of his wrath should come upon them...."

""Behold, this is a choice land, and whatsoever nation shall possess it shall be free from bondage, and from captivity, and from all other nations under heaven, if they will but serve the God of the land, who is Jesus Christ, who hath been manifested by the things which we have written.” (Ether 2:8, 12)"

"Thus we see this land, chosen above all others, raised up by the Lord in these latter days as a land of promise to all the world, was a land prepared in every way for the reestablishment of the Lord’s church, a land where the people have been warned to keep the commandments of the Lord or suffer their own destruction if they do not. The Constitution was established through the inspiration of God to preserve the liberty of the people and to maintain his promise."

CIVIL GOVERNMENT AND LAW
pp 134-136

"The United States of America is a nation with a spiritual foundation. The men who framed the Constitution were directed by the Spirit of the Lord in establishing the basic freedoms guaranteed the citizens of this country. But the United States of America will remain free only as long as we continue to be law-abiding, God-fearing people (see 2 Nephi 10:11-12 and Ether 2:8-12). The Church and its members can play a significant role in maintaining moral standards, and thus our freedoms."

"Satan is trying more than ever before to weaken and destroy our free agency. The members of the Church must not complacently stand by and allow their freedoms to be slowly destroyed. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we must be involved. We must maintain a high level of integrity and morality, and help others to do so. We must support the laws to maintain the freedoms this country offers."

"Unless we as members of the Church do all we can to preserve the freedoms we have, within the bounds of the laws of God, we will be held accountable."

It appears this book is no longer in print.

Excellent quotes! I am saddened that these things are no longer taught with vigor.
