Abortion in Australia

Post by Silver »

A major factor in overcoming a problem is first recognizing that a problem exists.

In Australia, abortions can occur as explained in this Wikipedia article.

The data at the following link is several years old, but shows Australia's ranking among other countries.

For some reason, the UN data I found is just about as old, but shows a similar ratio (20%).

I found several sources saying that abortion rates are on the decline in advanced economies, likely due to the availability of contraceptives.

Therefore, currently, the legal abortion rate in Australia may be slightly lower than the approximately 20% shown in the two links above, but historically there was a time in Australia when one in five fetuses were killed in the room. With ratios like that, it seems that any citizen of Australia who opposes abortion would be busy in trying to gently persuade their fellow citizens to only seek that solution in cases where the mother's physical health would be in danger.

Maybe. Others have suggested that obesity in the USA in teens has reduced their fertility and may be a factor in less conceptions taking place without contraceptives. Also, many young people are not just shunning relationships but also sex -- a trend already underway big time in Japan. Also too is the fact that many young women, sometimes to preserve their virginity, choose to hook up with women (especial when in college) for relationships that include physical intimacy with the plan that once they graduate they will eventually find a male partner.
