The sickness affects the LDS too
One of the reasons the American, and for that matter the European LDS community is dying may be a crisis of despair that has gripped western society in general. There is no optimism anymore. A work ethic means little in a society that corporations vie to replace western workers with cheaper outsourced workers. College is all but a dream for many of the middle class unless a young man or woman joins the military, or if the girl is attractive enough to break into porn. The middle class is caught between the poor who feel "entitled" to the many programs the government makes available and the rich who are akin to the vampires in the movie Daybreakers where human food is a scarce commodity controlled by a corporate oligarchy that harvests blood.
The solution? Maybe the only hope for the LDS is to reject the superficial Disney culture Gospel and return to the concept of breaking away and forming communities based on family and faith. Yes, we can learn from the various LDS fundamentalist communities -- with or without polygamy we cannot hope to survive if connected to the failed concept of consumerism.

There are still plenty of ways to make money. And education can basically be free if you look hard enough, there is also formal education at reasonable rates, through the LDS pathway option. In Australia every citizen is able to get gov to pay for education, most of the modern millenials are simply too lazy.

In Australia they say one in 4 youth are suffering from a severe mental illness. I have a daughter that is studding psychology and confirms the findings.
Most if not all the despair and derpession comes from only one source wickedness. The world is truly sick and needs to repent, that is the route of the problems. Interactions with young missionaries I see hope optimism and progression.

Being unable to afford college may be a blessing these days. Colleges seem to care more about indoctrinating the kids with backwards liberal ideas instead of providing an actual education. As already mentioned, plenty of other ways to earn a good living. I've got a brother with a GED that skipped college, started an HVAC business, and is making far better money than most college grads.

Re: The sickness affects the LDS too
I am sure this and other quotes have been quoted many times here, but why not again..
He [President Brigham Young] conversed freely on the situation of the Saints in the mountains, and said that he dreaded the time when the Saints would become popular with the world; for he had seen in sorrow, in a dream, or in dreams, this people clothed in the fashions of Babylon and drinking in the spirit of Babylon until one could hardly tell a Saint from a black-leg. And he felt like shouting, ‘To your tents, Oh Israel!’ because it was the only thing that could keep the people pure.”
And oh how that come to pass about us, among other things...

Unhappiness doesn't just come from wickedness. A lot of people give in to fear, doubt, and discouragement when they look at the state of the world, and it seems everything good is under attack. It can be hard for some to remain upbeat and positive if they tend to focus on the negatives.Spaced_Out wrote: ↑April 19th, 2017, 11:17 pm There are still plenty of ways to make money. I agree that technical training can provide students with the skills to earn a good living, without having to go head over heels in debt. One of my old friends became an electrician years ago and now owns a very successful business as an electrical contractor. I'm sure he makes more than most doctors these days.Rensai wrote: ↑April 19th, 2017, 11:44 pm Being unable to afford college may be a blessing these days. Government controls too much. The spirit of freedom has been choked over the years, and it's being hard pressed now. Not that many recognize that, but you don't have to, in order to have a spirit of despair. Like most people in wickedness who don't recognize that as being an issue, yet despair. If you give up and play the game, you can get free money--up to $70,000+/ year. And no taxes! If you earn $400,000/year, you will pay about 40% income taxes (plus all the other taxes)--we're giving Sweden a run for their money, but getting back less.Fiannan wrote: ↑April 19th, 2017, 10:41 pm One of the reasons the American, and for that matter the European LDS community is dying may be a crisis of despair that has gripped western society in general. The problem of consumerism? Easy. Kill a bunch of people, then tell the rest to put what they can in a car, or better yet backpack, and hike a few hundred or thousand miles to a society set up under Jesus Christ's true church and leaders.

Public schools address just as bad if not worse when it comes to pushing a liberal position. The focus of a lot of schools, like mine, is to focus on pushing team work over individuality. The follow the crowd mentality really controls a lot of youth today. With the general lack of discipline in schools over gets accustomed to disorders.Rensai wrote: ↑April 19th, 2017, 11:44 pm Being unable to afford college may be a blessing these days. A lot of the societal problems with millennials to me seem like manifestations of lack of identity and habit of disorder. The church needs to officially condone these schools but they won't as long as the Utah schools are majority Mormon

I think that's dependent on someone's chosen major. Even though there's plenty of incorrect scientific ideas, it's harder to incorporate the liberal dogma in STEM programs. History, sociology, political science and philosophy (in other words, the more useless majors) are prime soil for indoctrinating students.
But you are correct that it's possible to make a good living without a degree and honestly would be easier if more employers didn't want a degree for jobs that don't specifically require degree-related skills.

Yes!! That is a huge reason, and a big waste for many. I have heard more than one person say that on their first day of the job, their superior would tell them: "Forget everything you learned in school..."Sasquatch wrote: ↑April 20th, 2017, 5:01 pmI think that's dependent on someone's chosen major. In Taiwan, they did 5-year high schools, where the classes were concentrated on the future work, and when they were done, they were actually ready for work on the job.

Colleges and universities are businesses. They are there to make money and perpetuate the school.
It has long been known. Degree mills.
Someone recently posted that they asked a dentist how long it really takes to teach someone to do what they do. 3 months, he said. The rest is just fluff.
In terms of lawyers, I would say there is some benefit to a good law school. But a law school only partially teaches the law. What really must be learned in law school is how to think like a lawyer. I don't know how long that usually takes. I'd say one to three years depending on the individual.
As far as I know, undergraduate degrees have been considered useless for at least 30 years.

I hope you all recall one of the Apostles was asked what field the young people should go into. What they should do in life. Make something, he said. And I think that's absolutely right. Produce or make something.
