This book deeply analyzes how Sweden was turned from a conservative, Lutheran nation that prided its traditions to what it is today. One should read the whole thing but just read the few pages of chapter 15 and ask yourself if this is not the formula being used against the Church:

The basic game-plan is this, present sexual freedom as a right, then portray all forces against your "freedom" as reactionary and backwards. Once people buy into this mindset they will feel antagonism against all forces, particularly religion, that questions it. Now add to this the idea that to go against this freedom is an example of intolerance and hurtful intentions then you need not attack the institution directly, the person's emotions will do the trick for you.
Look at how many people are resigning their memberships due to the Church stance on homosexuality. And it will not matter in the least if the Church extends the proverbial olive branch to the gay community; any sort of negativity will be seen as hate. And as LDS youth are raised to love all people then what a fantastic technique to drive a wedge between their belief system and their emotions.
