Flying cars will never be here. They sound like a great idea but the idea is just not workable.
Aircraft need to be light. Cars need a lot more weight to help them stick to the road when there's a strong wind and they need heavy components to absorb the force of a collision so the passengers can be protected. Furthermore, since parts for aircraft need to be certified and all their maintenance needs to be done by airframe and powerplant certified mechanics - which will increase the price of maintenance tremendously. And a minor fender bender that would just cost a couple hundred in a car of will now cost thousands of dollars to repair.

To make matters even worse, there's the matter of airport access. Homeland security rules now restrict ramp access at almost all airports so you'll be able to land, convert your plane to car mode, and drive off the airport but you'll be stuck outside when you want to get to the runway.

"Flying Car" is a shorthand for flying personal transportation. They don't need to go on a highway (that is the point), they need only to fly.
