Will Obama Set a New Record?

Post by skmo »

Bill Clinton, on his last DAY in office granted 140 presidential pardons. Any guesses about how many pardons Obama will grant in his last few weeks in office?

He's faced criticism from the left because while he has commuted the sentences of more criminals than the last ELEVEN Presidents combined, he has issued fewer pardons. However, that's quickly changing. On December 19, President Obama set a record by granting more Presidential Clemency (pardons and commutation of sentences*) in a single day than any president ever, 231. In case you're wondering, he has so far granted 1,176 commutation of sentences (including 395 people who were serving life sentences) and pardoned 148 people.

What do you think? Is Obama going to set a record for the most pardons and/or commutations ever? Since FDR had over 2,800 pardons, I doubt he'll break that record, but he's already close to breaking the record for commutation of sentences.

*A Presidential Pardon means the person has their conviction erased, and all legal rights and privileges restored. A Commutation of Sentence means the conviction stands, but the person's term of imprisonment is reduced to time served and they are freed, but with the conviction still on their record.

We would do well to tally up the damage done to the United States and the to the rest of the world during the Obama administration in terms of lives lost and damaged, liberties/freedoms lost, and personal and national wealth lost.

Well, it wouldn't beat world War 2, where we leveled entire cities and hundreds of thousands killed on individual days.
