Thank you, I have been getting that wrong since 1988, when I was a missionary in Santaquin....

In early 1990, I went with my BYU astronomy class to the top of West Mountain one night to the BYU observatory... nice little trip...

FYI don't forget that we are at the peak of a 22 year cycle that also peaks every 11 years, its called the SUN cycle. Every 11 years for some reason the sun gets more active with solar flares and we get hotter. So this summer should be a bit warmer and then it will cool off again the following years and then heat up again. Every 11 years. 2012 is one of those years as was 2001 was a peak as well.

Not at all too unexpected.

But they had an "expert" on cbs news tonight saying the heat wave is prime indication of "global warming/change".

ALPINE fire is large, started this afternoon. (Utah again hit.)

Makes you wonder if the states of Utah and Colorado are going to burn up before summer is out? Thing is, the dry fuels are the worst they've been in almost 30 years and given the extreme dryness, low humidities and heat (100 degree temps), that's a perfect recipe for disaster. If the northeastern section of Mt. Timpanogos goes ablaze, that is going to be one heckuva fire to behold as the entire northeast-facing slope is full of dense dry as heck pine tress with about a foot of undergrowth - would look like a mini Yellowstone ablaze. :-o

Just my luck. I live in southern Az at the height of the 11 year cycle and move back in time to be here again that the height of the next one.

Thanks for the link, Col.

We had a really, really good rainstorm here that just ended a few minutes ago (but I don't think there are any fires around here). I wonder how far north the rain went?

The Alpine fire is now all along the ridge up the middle of Lone Peak - advancing towards American Fork Canyon (I can see it from my upstairs window)...

When I see the points of flame shoot up in the gathering dusk amidst the gloaming... and I see one flame up high in the farthest peak... it reminds em of this:

The rain is supposed to arrive in Utah on July 5th and last for a few days, the weathermen now say.
Let us pray that the rains will come soon.
The following seems at least somewhat apropos.

Helaman 11: 9..And it came to pass that when Nephi saw that the people had repented and did humble themselves in sackcloth, he cried again unto the Lord, saying:

10 O Lord, behold this people repenteth; and they have swept away the band of Gadianton from amongst them insomuch that they have become extinct[we wish!] [note that the Gadiantons came back almost immediately in the history, unfortunately but truly]...

12 O Lord, wilt thou turn away thine anger, yea, thy fierce anger, and cause that this famine [depression?] may cease in this land.

13 O Lord, wilt thou hearken unto me... and send forth rain upon the face of the earth, that she may bring forth her fruit, and her grain in the season of grain.

Dr. Jones, I think you have hit on something important here with relation to Helaman. I find it interesting that the book of Helaman in chapter 11 speaks of famine, and just a few chapters later in 13 it talks about money becoming slippery, and 15 Samuel the lamanite is also warning the Nephites of earthquakes prior to the death of the savior. We have drought, famine worsening with lack of crop production, and economic woes (slippery money) . Next up earthquakes?
A man can no more diminish God's glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, 'darkness' on the walls of his cell.

Right -- I look at the Book of Mormon as reading like the morning newspaper (Pres. Hinckley, Aug 2005 Ensign), and giving strong "clues" as to what lies ahead. In this way, it is a book of prophecy and VERY interesting.

Moroni saw our day, and he tells it like it is -- famine (depression) followed by drought... money becomes slippery...breakdown of society and government (3 Nephi 3ff) -- then the EARTHQUAKES and fire (3Nephi 8). Jesus also said that EQs are among the signs of the times of the last days (Matthew 24).

I would not be surprised to see some major earthquakes by the end of the year.

My prayers go out to all of you who are going through these terrible events. I pray it rains till all the tires are out and all the crops are watered to back to life.

HAHA Yesss. You know, this is one of those scenes that breaks the suspension of disbelief where you go, "Dang who's job is it to sit up there 24/7 and look for a bonfire." Especially in some of those super remote snow capped peaks. Talk about boredom.
